Issues Response Meeting Media CoverageInnisfail 2010/05/25

Innisfail Province
How clean is our air? The residents of Innisfail may soon have the chance to find out.

A portable air quality monitor may be set up near Innisfail next year to measure levels air pollution in the area. The exact location for the monitor will be determined based on feedback residents gave at a meeting Wednesday, May 19 at the Legion, but some possible locations include near the Johns Manville plant, the Highway 2 corridor or measuring the affect of herbicide spray near Torrington.

The Parkland Airshed Management Zone asked the public to come forward and share their concerns about air pollution and these locations made the top of their list of concerns. “We monitor air quality based on issues and concerns so that we can look for a way to solve the problems,” said Kevin Warren, Executive Director of PAMZ. “Having local people put forth the case has a lot more weight.”

Some of the issues brought up during the meeting included odors and pollution from feedlots, manufacturers, chemical processing plants, the transportation corridor, road paving, vehicle emissions, burning crop stubble and ground level ozone.

Members from the Energy Resources Conservation Board and the Natural Energy Resources Conservation Board and Alberta Environment also attended the meeting to provide their opinion as citizens and professionals. “I think the people from the town brought up a lot of issues,” said Jim McKintey, an air quality regulator with the NRCB. “I think the meeting went well but wish more of the public showed up.”
